    Description

This lot contains 1 older Dutch moon bead, measuring 27 mm x 27.5 mm and 5 more uniform Dutch moon beads from the late 1800’s. All 6 beads are translucent and opalescent.
The five beads from the 1800’s are well made with paddled holes, forming flat edges that are less prone to chipping. They range in size from 21 mm to 23 mm from hole to hole, and 24 mm to 25 mm in diameter. There is very minimal wear to these 5 beads, only a few scratches and minuscule chipping around the holes.
The older bead has two long, but relatively shallow flakes missing near one hole. The largest flake is approximately 17 mm x 11 mm x 3 mm. The smaller flake is approximately 12 mm x 9 mm x 2 mm.
    (See 1st photo.) There
is a stable crack following the shaft of the hole on one side of the bead, and a also a stable flake near the other end of the hole. (See 3rd and 4th photos)
These beads are attributed to Venice, Germany, and the Netherlands, where they acquired the name “18th Century Amsterdam’s”. They are known from sample bead cards from the London merchant, Moses L. Levin, from 1851 - 1869, and J. F. Sick and Co., based in Germany and Holland, but have been traced back as early as the 1500’s. They acquired there name of “moon beads” due to their resemblance of the moon.
