    Description

These are two very old (probably from the mid to late 1700’s), very rare, very large mandrel wound Dutch moon beads. There are a few very minor chips near the holes. On one bead there is a small imperfection that protruded from the side of the bead, and it has been partially chipped away over centuries of wearing. (See photos) other than that, these two beads are in excellent condition.
These beads are attributed to Venice, Germany, and the Netherlands, where they acquired the name “18th Century Amsterdam’s”. I have mainly heard them referred to as Dutch, because of their similarity to mandrel wound Dutch Dogon beads from the 1700’s - 1800’s. They are known from sample bead cards from the London merchant, Moses L. Levin, from 1851 - 1869, and J. F. Sick and Co., based in Germany and Holland, but have been traced back as early as the 1500’s. These large beads acquired their nickname of “moon beads” due to their resemblance of the moon.
The bead with the small flaw measures 33 mm x 34 mm. The other bead is 33.5 mm x 33 mm. These are easily worth 0 to 0 each. (Check out others this size online.) I am offering them at a 5 for the pair, but will consider reasonable offers.
Free shipping to buyer and 14 day return (buyer pays return shipping) if not satisfied.
