Description
Here's a special one indeed, an early Lane Era Charatan Freehand Relief XL Panel Saddle canted Dublin that has remained unsmoked for close to 60 years! I do not recall if the number indicates a grade, but I believe it does and I have never seen over a 3 but this one is stamped "4". If it is indeed a grade rather than a size designation, it's certainly no wonder as this pipe shows ring grain blast that is truly out of this world. An XL pipe, it surprisingly fits perfectly in hand with a massive Dublin type bowl with ultra thick walls that is rectangular with a natural plateau or rough cut rim leading to a cavernous chamber. At over 7" long and almost 3" tall, it is amazingly lightweight at only 68g. Showing quite a bit of forward cant, it tapers down to a flat base that allows the pipe to be a very fine setter and transitions to a sturdy squared shank that meets the original vulcanite saddle stem with wide fishtail bit and crisp CP logo. The finish is a deep rustic golden brown with a touch of red while the aforementioned blast shows remarkable 360 degree deep craggy ring grain, impressive indeed! Awaiting its first smoke, this Charatan is for the discerning collector and simply will not disappoint. Comes complete with Charatan sock.Nomenclature: CHARATAN'S MAKE, LONDON ENGLAND, FREEHAND RELIEF, 4, (LANE LOGO)
